Know the Twitter Follow Rules and Best Practices

Twitter is growing tremendously popular today among both individual users and businesses, so it’s becoming increasingly important for you to understand Twitter follow rules. To ensure you conduct Twitter best practices, this Twitter training covers terms and rules you need to understand when “following” on Twitter.

  • Following: According to Twitter, following is “a way to receive information in the form of tweets from a person, a company or an organization.”
  • Daily follow limits: Limits are broken down into two-hour increments with Twitter follow rules saying you can’t follow more than 83 new people in a two-hour period. Technically, the daily follow limit is 1000, but once you are following 2000 people, your limits change to ratios specific to your account. In other words, as long as more people follow you, you can continue to follow other Twitter users as well.
  • Aggressive following: You are monitored for aggressive following, which is when you attempt to follow hundreds of accounts in a short period of time just for attention.
  • Aggressive follow churn: Twitter follow rules also dictate that you can’t follow and un-follow a large group of people repeatedly in a short period of time. Participating in aggressive following or aggressive follow churn is reason enough to have your account suspended.

Why do Twitter Follow Rules Exist?

  • Follow limits reduce spamming.
  • Limits also help prevent Twitter servers from becoming overloaded.
  • Building followers is not a race, and a strong following shouldn’t be expected to develop overnight. The limits of Twitter follow rules are quite high, and there’s no reason you should even approach them.

Third-Party Apps

  • There are some third-party websites and applications that claim to help you gain large numbers of followers very quickly. However, before you use such an application, keep the following in mind:
  • Some third-party apps have been associated with spamming, fraud or the unauthorized selling of passwords and usernames. Because of this, you must be aware that using third-party apps could have an impact on your good standing with Twitter.
  • Many third-party apps won’t deliver their promises of strategic community-building on Twitter.
  • Some apps are genuinely helpful, but you should never provide your username or password to any third-party app unless you thoroughly research it and deem it safe.
